Our CX-5 is getting some age but is still a great car. We bought it brand new in December 2012 with 6 miles.
Over the last six-and-a-half years, we have only had to do normal maintenance items ( tires, brakes, wipers, and air filters/oil changes). The only two “repairs” it has needed are a software update to the transmission control module (covered in a TSB), and an adjustment to the tailgate latch.
I also changed the light bulb that illuminates the gearshift indicator in the center console when I noticed it had burned out in 2015. We installed a backup camera from Amazon as ours is just a Sport (base) model and didn’t come with one from the factory.
Averages 26-27 MPG in the city and well over 30 on the highway. It’s a great vehicle for us and I look forward to many more miles with it.
I got my wife a gift certificate to have it fully professionally detailed for Mother’s Day...since she spilled an entire fruit smoothie in the front passenger seat a couple weeks ago. :-O
TL;DR: We have been very blessed with reliable service from our CX-5, even though it’s an early production model of an entirely new platform from a tiny company. YMMV, but I’d recommend one if you or anyone you know is interested in a small-ish crossover.

T he CX-5 was the only other vehicle we went back to and test drove a second time when Mrs. Snuze and I were shopping for her new CUV last year . It was a really, really strong 2nd place for us . The only things that let it down in my mind were the lack of power (for me more so than my wife) and it’s low towing capacity. N eeding to buy her a new car killed my used truck dreams, so the tradeoff was to get something with decent towing capability and get a utility trailer.
That said, I love the way the CX-5 looks, and the fit and finish was great. I know Mazda says they are trying to move up-market but I was already really impressed with how nice the CX-5 was on the inside compared to the CR-V and especially the F orester . If I’m being totally honest it’s probably even slightly better than our Terrain Denali in some areas . I also love the 6 speed automatic compared to those other two’s CVTs. The CX-5 stuck out to me as the “Miata of crossovers” in that it managed to be the most fun to drive despite being the slowest of everything we tested .
O utside of our particular circumstance, I was really impressed with the CX-5 and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Especially the new Reserve & Signature trims which defintely correct that power deficit.

In the same time with the same miles my 2013 outback has gone through one engine, two sets of brakes and two sets of tires. A couple of recalls but nothing lease to note. I’m very glad I got the manual otherwise we might be on transmission number 2.

Recommend these all the time - latest time a few months back, but I think she’s going with a CPO Macan. A different animal ...

Our 2013 CVT Outback is at nearly 90k and we’ve had nothing outside of normal maintenance so far. Well besides several sets of tires and a windshield but that’s not the car’s fault.

Ours was excellent except for one bad battery that was replaced under warranty. Unfortunately it wasn’t big enough for two kids and a dog. It was time to upgrade to the minivan.
